Our first workshop to include Jingle Dance!
A snowstorm made it difficult for many to make it, but we held the session for the brave people who came.
We opened with teachings from Elder Danka Brewer of Shabot Obaajiwan First Nation. She told us how dance functioned as a universal language between different groups of Indigenous people. Dance became a way of telling stories to create understanding.
We were blessed to also have Elder Norma Cook of Misipawistik Cree Nation. She shared her memories of jigging at family and community gatherings. She also spoke of her experiences at jigging competitions which were common to many Indigenous communities on northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
The The Lyons Sisters taught an introduction to Metis Jigging, and Ayla Martin demonstrated basic steps for Jingle Dance.
We all had a great time and we hope you’ll join us next week for more bannock and dance workshops! We’re grateful to Odawa Native Friendship Centre for inviting us to host these sessions.
