Bannock Workshop

Bannock Workshop

Our second workshop of 2023!

The weather wasn’t very cooperative, but those that braved the terrible snowstorm to attend were rewarded with a great time! As with all Y4Y/Kisac sessions, supplies and equipment were provided so participants could focus on learning.

We opened with teachings from Elder Danka Brewer of Shabot Obaajiwan First Nation. She talked about how the land fed the Indigenous people through hunting and gathering. However, when people were forced onto reservations they had to learn to make the most with the provisions that were given to them – flour, salt, sugar, and lard. Bannock was a way to stretch out the rations to feed many people. Hundreds of different recipes exist, varying by community and region.

We were blessed to also have Elder Norma Cook of Misipawistik Cree Nation. She shared how moose bone soup was a staple in the north and how it, along with bannock, helped to sustain many families like hers through the long winters.

By the end, everyone had some take-and-bake bannock to put in the oven at home and enjoy hot and fresh.

A great time was had by all, and we hope you’ll join us next week for another bannock workshop! We’re grateful to Odawa Native Friendship Centre for inviting us to host these sessions.
