We recently hosted a horsemanship workshop and it was one of the most joyful days we’ve ever had.
Twelve Indigenous youth and their families joined us for an afternoon on the land, learning all about horses. Together, we learned how horses communicate, how to care for them, what they eat, and how to keep them healthy and happy. We also learned how to brush and groom them. The horses loved all the attention!
Everyone had the chance to ride a horse or a pony that was just right for their age and size. Our youngest rider was only four years old, and they were absolutely beaming. The excitement and confidence we saw grow throughout the day was something we’ll carry with us for a long time.
Parents and caregivers told us that this was one of the most wonderful experiences their children had ever had. For many youth, it was their very first time being near horses, let alone riding one. Seeing how quickly they connected with the animals reminded us how powerful cultural and land-based learning can be.
We’re so grateful to the families who joined us and to everyone who helped make this workshop possible. Days like this show us exactly why we do this work—because our youth deserve opportunities to explore, learn, and feel proud of who they are.
We can’t wait to get back into the saddle again soon!
