We were honoured to present our Introduction to Métis Dot Art workshop during the OCDSB’s PD Day on March 28, 2025, held at the Canada Science and Technology Museum. Participants arrived eager to explore Métis dot art—an expressive style that uses small, colourful dots of paint to mimic beadwork and create detailed floral designs inspired by the prairie flowers of the Homeland.
The workshop began with a prayer and teaching from Elder Parm Burgie, who shared the cultural significance of the Métis sash. We then offered a brief overview of the history and importance of dot art in Métis culture, followed by a showcase of works from various Métis artists to inspire creativity.
As traditional fiddle music played gently in the background, participants began crafting their own pieces, guided by the examples and stories we’d shared. Y4Y Canada facilitators demonstrated technique and offered hands-on support throughout. The room soon filled with smiles, laughter, and a shared sense of calm focus. Several participants described the experience as therapeutic—and we couldn’t agree more.
