Youth4Youth Canada had the opportunity to share the beauty of Indigenous dance with over 150 young campers aged 3 to 16 at Stonehaven Community Church. The day was filled with joy, learning, and creativity, thanks to the warm welcome we received from Camp Director Gwen, her husband Pastor Kaleb, and their enthusiastic son Cory.
As we arrived at the camp, the campers were eager to learn and participate, making our job as instructors a delight. We spent the day teaching them various Indigenous dance styles, allowing them to express themselves through movement. The energy and enthusiasm from the group were infectious, and it was heartwarming to see the kids fully engaged and enjoying the experience.
One of the highlights of the day was the beautiful backdrop created by the young artists at the camp. They crafted a stunning scene featuring a log cabin, a canoe, a well, and a river. This creative project not only added to the atmosphere but also showcased the campers' artistic talents. It was a perfect representation of the connection between nature and Indigenous culture, enhancing the overall experience for everyone involved.
Before we wrapped up our day, we wanted to share a piece of our culture with the campers. We brought along some homemade traditional bannock, a type of bread that holds significance in many Indigenous communities. The campers enjoyed tasting this delicious treat, and it was a wonderful way to end our time together, fostering a sense of community and connection.
This day was not just about teaching dance; it was about building relationships, sharing culture, and creating lasting memories. We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with such an enthusiastic group of young people and look forward to more events like this in the future. Thank you to Gwen, Pastor Kaleb, Cory, and all the campers for making this day so special!
