We recently had the opportunity to visit Broadview Public School to facilitate a beadwork-inspired dot art workshop with a group of enthusiastic Grade 4 students.
During the workshop, we explored the history of dot art from around the world. Students learned about pointillism, an art movement that emerged in Europe and used small dots of colour to create larger images. We also discussed contemporary Métis artists who use dots in their artwork, the growth of digital dot art, and how dot art can support cultural revitalization and reconnection for many modern Métis people.
For many students, this was their first experience using paint and fine paint brushes. At first, some were unsure of their abilities, but they quickly gained confidence as they experimented with colours, patterns, and techniques. One of the most exciting parts of the workshop was seeing how every painting turned out differently. Although students were learning the same techniques, each artwork reflected the unique creativity of the artist who created it.
Throughout the day, we observed students helping one another, asking classmates for feedback, and offering constructive suggestions to their neighbours. We also heard many words of encouragement as students shared their progress and celebrated each other's successes. These moments reminded us that art is not only about creativity but also about building community and supporting one another.
At the end of the workshop, students proudly carried their completed paintings to the front of the classroom, where the artwork was displayed for everyone to see. The sense of accomplishment was clear as students admired both their own creations and the unique work of their classmates.

We are grateful to the students and staff at Broadview Public School for welcoming us into their classroom. It was inspiring to see so much creativity, curiosity, and kindness on display throughout the day.
