Celebrating Métis Heritage with the Oshawa & Durham Region Métis Council

We were honoured to return to the Oshawa & Durham Region Métis Council's 17th Annual Métis Heritage Celebration on June 20, 2026. The event brought together Métis families, community members, and visitors for a full day of culture, learning, music, food, and celebration at the Ajax Community Centre.

This was a special visit for us because the last time we performed at this celebration was in 2023. It was wonderful to reconnect with familiar faces and to see how the event has continued to grow over the past few years.

Our team was invited to share both Métis jigging and Fancy Shawl dancing with the audience. Taliah and Sarina performed traditional Métis jigging, while Akina shared the beauty and athleticism of Fancy Shawl dance. Throughout the performances, we talked about the history and cultural significance of each dance style.

The celebration featured something for everyone. Families enjoyed Métis crafts, children's activities, delicious food, vendor tables, a silent auction, and plenty of opportunities to connect with community members. Guests were also treated to wonderful performances by Métis folk singer-songwriter Amanda Rheaume and talented fiddler Alyssa Delbaere-Sawchuk, whose music helped create a festive atmosphere.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the recognition of local graduates. We were incredibly touched when Helen Giacchetta, President of the Oshawa & Durham Region Métis Council, presented Akina and Sarina with special gifts in recognition of their high school graduation. It was a thoughtful gesture that celebrated the accomplishments of Métis youth while encouraging them as they begin the next chapter of their educational journeys.

We are grateful to the Oshawa & Durham Region Métis Council for inviting us back to be part of this year's celebration and for the warm hospitality shown to our team. Events like these help strengthen community connections, celebrate Métis culture, and create opportunities for people of all ages to learn together.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, watched our performances, asked questions, and celebrated with us. We look forward to seeing everyone again in the future.
